Welcome GK-12 teachers,

This page is to introduce you to our GK-12 website. The point of this wiki is to help us (fellows) and you (teachers) communicate about teaching science in classrooms. We have tried to make the layout as simple as possible, but if you see or think of something that might be useful we welcome any suggestions. Below is a list of the different areas in the wiki along with a brief description of what that section contains.

Discussion Pages

Before we go over the various sections, we will first point out that at the top of each page, there is a section for discussions. This is our means to communicate ideas about kits and other topics. Each page in the wiki has its own discussion page. Say you want to view discussions about the Physics of Sound kit. You would first navigate to the Physics of Sound page, and then click on the discussions tab. There you will be able to add to other discussions or start a new one.

Classroom Materials

Kits: In this area you will find a list of the FOSS kits that we all use. Each kit has its own page where we layout information on the lessons and general tips. Some of the information here will be identical to what is in the kit manuals. The rest is comprised of notes on how lessons actually went and anything else that’s useful. Our goal is to include both teacher and fellow experiences.

Demos and Extras: In this area we list many of the various science demonstrations we can bring to the classroom. We borrow some of these demos from our departments so they may not be available at all times.

Oregon Science Standards: Here you can find information on Oregon’s adopted science standards.

Work Samples: Here you will find an overview of the work sample. The actual work sample testing is conducted in 4th-5th grade, but to be truly effective all grade levels should be involved. We have listed here good FOSS kit lessons/experiments that each grade can do.
